2019-2020
Tubac Singers Concerts

Join us for two days of joyous music and celebration!

You'll enjoy two performances each year, one in the winter and again in the spring.
The singers begin rehearsals early in the fall and are thrilled to share their musical gifts with you.

History of the Tubac Singers

The Tubac Singers is an adult, all-volunteer mixed chorus sponsored and supported by the Tubac Center of the Arts as a part of their Performing Arts Programming.

The group was founded in 1984 by Tubac resident, Miriam Sobel, who approached TCA Executive Director about expanding programming to include a music component.  With that blessing, and eight intrepid volunteers, the group began.  Under Miriam’s guidance the group grew to 20 with members from Tubac, Amado, Rio Rico and Green Valley.  The musical focus was then, and remains now, on quintessential American music:  Broadway favorites, folksongs, jazz, spirituals, as well as contemporary ballads and popular music.

After Miriam’s death in 1992, Marty Schuyler took over as director and remains in that position today.  The group now numbers 37.

Throughout the last 35 years, the Tubac Singers have performed at the Art Center during the Christmas season and in the spring.  The group has sung for civic groups in Nogales, for many social clubs, organizations, HOAs in Green Valley.  A reasonable fee and a great sound makes the group a popular choice!

If the Tubac Singers were to have a motto it would be, “Take your music seriously, not yourselves.”  We set high standards for ourselves and always strive to improve.  But we love music enough that we want to enjoy the process of making music.  We enjoy each other and support each other in rehearsals and concerts.

New members are always welcome.  We ask that members come to us with some choral experience (church choir, high school or college choir, community chorus) even if that experience was not terribly recent.  We also ask that members read music.  Spectacular voices are not required; your voice will get better and stronger as you sing with us.  Auditions are not required.  The group rehearses every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 to 5pm at the Art Center beginning the first of October and ending in April.

Marty Schuyler, Director of the Tubac Singers

Director of the Tubac Singers since 1992, Marty Schuyler has been with the group since 1989, first as a singer and then as accompanist.  Taking over from the founder of the group, Miriam Sobel, was a leap of faith as she had had no choral directing experience.  It helped that the members of the group were very patient and very kind!

Marty was born into a musical family.  She began studying piano at age 5 and was one of those rare children who enjoyed practicing.  She attended a high school that had a remarkable music program at which time she began to study voice and sang in choral groups led by outstanding directors.  Whatever she brought to bear with the Tubac Singers she learned from them.

The years working with the Tubac Singers have been enormously rewarding for so many reasons.  For the first 20 years, the group’s accompanist was her mother, Lois Sprague, which added a special dimension to an already loving relationship.  Coming back to music after a corporate career was a joyful surprise.  And working with a group of people who come together for the sheer joy of lifting their voices together never ceases to be a thrill.
