His sketch books are overflowing with detailed drawings and paintings of birds. This exhibit celebrates birding in Arizona during the Tubac Takes Flight season with large and small paintings by Roy Purcell.
He became well known for poignant watercolors and etchings of western history and landscapes. His interest in printmaking led him into worldwide projects culminating in the production of the (then) world’s largest intaglio prints. He then retreated from public life to focus on personal and spiritual growth and the development and mastery of various painting styles and techniques.
“Purcell’s work reminds us of the mysticism of William Blake, the mastery of Michelangelo and the passion of Van Gogh – gifts he uses with deep insight and compassion from the perspective of the ages yet with the poignancy of our own time and needs.” – Senator Harry Reid –?United States Senate
