Karon Leigh is a lifelong artist winning awards since high school. She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the California Bay area. She studied art at California College of Arts & Crafts, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Kirkland Art Center as well as with numerous professional artists. She has taught art workshops in printmaking and encaustic since 2006.

Currently, Karon resides in Southern Arizona, working from her studio in the artist’s colony of Tubac, south of Tucson. Her paintings are based on dreams, memories, and often inspired by the landscape and the weather of southern Arizona. Her work explores a sense of place, acknowledging the people who came before us, the lives lived and history of what is left behind, while celebrating the beauty of the natural world and the places we call home.

She creates intuitively, allowing the process to direct the art making experience. Following the path of the expressionist painters, those who attacked their canvases with a vigorous gestural expressionism, her art is grounded in personal experience, celebrating life with bold colors and sensual shapes.

Intuitive Painting & Expressive Mark Making
Instructor: Karon Leigh

Find your artistic voice through the process of exploring painting and mark making based on your intuition.

Have you ever wanted to just let go and paint what you feel? In this course, through several different exercises, we will explore steps into unknown territory to discover our own artistic voice. With a full body approach to painting, and space for self-awareness, we end up with our unique creative art making dance.

Starting with charcoal, pencil, black and white acrylic paints, we’ll explore mark making with different approaches to get loose and move past how we think we are supposed to draw and paint and get into experiencing the feeling of mark making.

Creating our own tools with found objects and items from nature, we’ll discover ways to develop marks that don’t require traditional painting tools or brushes. As we continue to draw and paint purely from feeling and emotion, responding to each mark made with the next, we naturally discover marks and shapes that resonate with us. With a limited color palette, we mix and select colors that align with our emotions.

Bringing the marks, shapes, and colors together we create artworks that come from a place within on a very intuitive and expressive level.
In the end we’ve danced our way to self-discovery and a new way to find joy in art-making.
