The Architecture of Mary Colter: Builder Upon the Red Earth:
As a woman, Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter was original, complex, creative and unconventional. Her architecture exhibits those qualities as well; it was an expression of her personality and her passion. Andrew Berke, one of her biographers, says it well: The story of Mary Colter, is compelling. It is a one-of-a-kind tale of talent and tenacity, played out against a backdrop of flourishing opportunity in a rugged region–telling of an exceptional person who pioneered both as an architect and as a woman. In this talk, Susan will talk about the buildings at the south rim of the Grand Canyon, but also about some of Mary Colter’s hotels – El Navajo and especially La Posada in Winslow, AZ.
