History

In 2015, master artist Lou Maestas (1939-2017) founded The Tubac Art Academy. Known as “the village where art and history meet,” Tubac, Arizona, was the perfect place for Lou to realize his dream of creating a community program for fine art instruction.

After his passing in 2017, a handful of artists and supporters came together to continue Lou’s dream and created the Tubac School of Fine Art, LLC with the leadership of school director, Leslie Miller.

In the fall of 2020, the Tubac School of Fine Art joined Tubac Center of the Arts as the Adult Education Division of the nonprofit Art Center. Together they are the leader of arts programming and opportunity in Southern Arizona.

Tubac Where Art and History Meet

Tubac is a historic destination for the arts, known for its beautiful skies, surrounding mountain ranges, and abundant wildlife.  The Tubac Golf Resort is within walking distance to the village filled with more than 100 eclectic shops, art galleries, and studios. Situated in the old town in a charming complex of adobe brick buildings, the school is the ideal place to ponder the beauty that surrounds the town in splashes of color and light. It is truly the village where art and history meet.

El Presidito

It’s a historic destination in itself with its distinctive architecture and alluring patios. The Griffin family built the plaza in the 1950s, modeled on the sketch of Tubac’s original presidio (Spanish fort) by author J. Ross Browne, who visited in the mid-1850s. It has served as a post office and restaurant before eventually becoming a haven for painters, sculptors, and other artists. Its location across the street and north of the Presidio State Historic Park is also the entry to Old Town Tubac.
